Dropped kerbs: permission, contractors and the process

Understand council approval, highway requirements and why Street Works capability matters.

The council controls the highway

A dropped kerb normally requires highway-authority approval before work begins. The authority may assess visibility, parking depth, trees, street furniture, drainage and the road classification.

Approved construction and qualified operatives

Work in the public highway must follow the authority’s specification and may require accredited Street Works operatives, traffic management and inspections. The private driveway and highway crossing should be planned together.

A sensible order of work

Check eligibility, apply to the council, obtain the required approval, agree the contractor and specification, then coordinate the crossing with the driveway levels and drainage.
