Driveway drainage: what homeowners need to know

How falls, channels, permeable bases and soakaways protect the surface and property.

Where will the rainwater go?

The answer should be agreed before excavation begins. Falls must direct water away from the building and prevent it collecting at thresholds, garage doors, walls or low points.

Channels, permeable construction and soakaways

Depending on the property, the design may use linear channels, a permeable base, a suitable soakaway or a combination. Existing drains cannot simply be assumed to have enough capacity or to be a lawful connection.

Drainage details worth checking

Confirm finished levels, channel positions, outlet points, the treatment of manholes and how adjoining paths or neighbouring land are protected. These details should appear in the written scope.
